World-Class Quality and Affordable Products from Lamoiyan Corporation

As a wife, I am the one in-charge of the family's budget. I am mostly responsible as well in choosing the products for use of my family. Such, it is my goal that I buy products that are world-class in quality yet affordable and therefore within our budget.

Nowadays with the rising inflation rates, what can you buy if you  only have five pesos in your palm right now?

But for practical mom Edith Dimalanta from Malabon, she still finds the P5 in her purse valuable, especially every time she goes to a nearby sari-sari store to buy a personal hygiene item her family cannot live without. “Nakakabili pa din ako ng sachet ng toothpaste sa halagang limang piso (I can still buy a sachet of toothpaste for P5,)" she beams, "at yun ay ang toothpaste (and that's  toothpaste)."

With a product that's more affordable than other leading brands, she says that buying a quality yet affordable tooth care product remains possible for an average Filipino family like them amid rising costs of living.

"Salamat sa mga gumawa ng  toothpaste at iba pang household at personal care item dahil may quality of life na ang mga pamilya ngayon sa pamamagitan ng kanilang de-kalidad at affordable na mga produkto (We thank the makers of toothpaste and other household and personal care items because families can now live quality lives through their better yet affordable products)," notes Ronald Serillos, a cab driver and father of five from San Juan.

Not too many know that behind this all-Filipino brand is Lamoiyan Corporation. Headed by a visionary, Dr. Cecilio K. Pedro, Lamoiyan Corporation dared the giants of the toothpaste manufacturing industry and provided consumers with a world-class quality yet affordable alternative oral care product. It was in 1998 when his business venture that supplied aluminum toothpaste tubes to multinationals closed shop due to the shift from using aluminum to plastic tubes. However, it opened the door for him to establish Lamoiyan Corporation in March that same year.

“We introduced world-class quality toothpaste at affordable prices so Filipinos can afford to brush their teeth regularly, especially those in the provinces where toothpaste and toothbrush are expensive.

That dream pushed us initially and we were not afraid to face the giant multinationals because we believe there is the need to help Filipinos, particularly the poorest of the poor,” says Dr. Pedro, President and CEO of Lamoiyan Corporation.

Since day one, the company lived up to its corporate mission—to help improve the quality of life of Filipino families through world-class products. From creating the phenomenal dental care product toothpaste, the company also expanded to include household and personal care brands like Gumtect, Kutitap, Dazz, and Licealiz

By bringing essential products within reach of many, this brought 25 years of happy moments not just for the company itself and its people, but also for those who shared the journey with Lamoiyan Corporation. Maintaining the world-class quality and affordability of their products enabled customers to save money for other important things for their families.

"Ang pera na matitipid ko sa pagbili ng sachet ng toothpaste sa halip na mas mahal na brand ay malaki ang maitutulong sa akin. Magagamit ko pa itong pambili ng iba pang bagay na kailangan sa bahay o kahit sa baon ng mga anak ko (The money I could save from buying a sachet of toothpaste instead of the more expensive brands will really help me a lot. I could use it to buy other things we need at home or even for my kids’ 'baon')," cites Dimalanta.

Apart from the economic benefits provided by Lamoiyan Corporation’s products, consumers have remained loyal to the brand due to its world-class quality performance. "Gaya ng kanilang dishwashing product, ang mga plato namin ay laging malinis at malayo sa germs (Just like its dishwashing product, it keeps our dishes always clean and germ-free)," bares Serillos.

Health-wise, the company also never compromises on this regard. Mindful of the fact that one of the reasons of kids’ absenteeism in schools are tooth decay and head lice infestation, Lamoiyan Corporation committed itself to be part of the solution via itsand Licealiz Anti-lice Shampoo products.
"Madalas akong absent sa school dahil sa sakit ng ngipin (I used to be absent in school because of toothache)," says Homer Ellamil, a Grade 2 student from Batasan Hills Elementary School in Quezon City. "Dahil sa toothpaste, lagi na akong nagtu-toothbrush kaya wala nang sakit ng ngipin (Because of toothpaste, I can now brush my teeth regularly; no more toothaches.)"

Meanwhile, for Princess Tejada, a Grade 3 pupil of Batasan Hills, whose head used to be infested with head lice, she tried Licealiz when Lamoiyan Corporation held its "Adopt-a-Barangay" program in their area. From then on, she never missed a class anymore.

"Dati, gumagamit ang Nanay ko ng suyod para maalis ang lisa sa buhok ko pero walang nangyayari. Nung sinubukan ko ang Licealiz, ang laking ginhawa. Di na nangangati ulo ko at madalas na ako pumapasok sa school dahil wala na akong lisa sa ulo (Before, my mother used 'suyod' to remove the lice in my hair but it was not effective. When I tried Licealiz, it helped me a lot. Now, I'm itch-free and I don’t skip school anymore because of lice infestation that made me feel insecure," she vividly recalls.

Tejada, together with Dimalanta, Serillos and Ellamil, are just some of the living proof of how excellent Lamoiyan products are that enable them to live worry-free lives. They remind us that the P5 seen today of no value, nevertheless, is worthy of keeping students in school.

Bring Back the Brown Rice Tradition

Looking back, Filipinos ate only brown rice until Westerners introduced the modern milling process that produced white, polished rice which soon dominated the market and eventually changed our cultural tradition on rice preference. Bringing back the tradition of eating brown rice can help achieve the government's goal of rice self-sufficiency in the near future while addressing the country's nutritional and health problems.
Rice is the major staple food of Filipinos, contributing about 35.7 percent of the average daily individual food intake, making it the major source of carbohydrates in the Filipino diet. White rice is the most-consumed form of rice, based on the Food Consumption Data of the 7th National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST).

Brown rice, however, is the form of rice that has undergone minimal milling. It is gaining popularity today primarily due to its nutritional and health benefits. It provides all the necessary carbohydrate requirements of an individual just like white rice. Its Its bran layer is a source of dietary fiber, minerals and B vitamins.

image taken from the web
Beyond its nutritional and health benefits, every Filipino eating brown rice daily may help the country achieve its vision of rice self-sufficiency.

Production of brown rice reduces the power demand needed in polishing and whitening by as much 65 percent. More so, with the bran and the embryo intact and fewer broken grains, whole grain-milling recovery is as much as 10 percent higher than for white rice. Thus, with higher recovery of milling and consumption of brown rice, our national rice importation requirement may be reduced.
The DOST, through the FNRI, is leading the research and development on brown rice to determine the various aspects of improving the stability and shelf-life of brown rice. With this, brown rice can be stored at a longer period with no significant changes in nutrient composition and sensory qualities. Longer shelf-life provides ample time for developing value-added products that can provide healthier options for consumers.
Related to this, the FNRI-DOST has successfully determined in 2012 the optimum conditions for extending the shelf-life of brown rice so that it can now be stored from 5-9 months instead of only 1-4 months. Storage of brown rice is a major problem among rice millers. But with the S&T solution being offered by the FNRI-DOST, our rice producers may soon be more confident in supplying brown rice in the market knowing it can last longer, compete with other types of rice and cost-efficient to produce.
In terms of nutritional value, initial analysis shows that a serving of cooked brown rice can provide the daily recommended energy and nutrient intake (RENI) of an adult 19 years old and above by 10 percent of energy, 7 percent protein, 2 percent calcium, 5 percent iron, and 16 percent zinc. The dietary fiber can also satisfy about 8 percent of the recommended intake. Underway are efficacy studies to verify the health claims associated with the consumption of brown rice.
Thus, bringing back the tradition of eating brown rice not only improves every Filipino's health and nutrition, but also helps the economy at large by reducing our rice importation requirement on the agricultural side, and the problems of malnutrition on the health side.

Department of Transporatation and Communications (DOTC) Calls For Technology-Based Proposals To Solve Illegal Bus Operations

Seeking to solve wide-ranging issues caused by the illegal operations of buses and other public utility vehicles, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Land Transportation Franchising & Regulatory Board (LTFRB) are resorting to modern technology, in line with a strong Anti-Colorum campaign.

In a Request for Information (RFI) published earlier this week (May 14, 2013), the DOTC called for proposals from the public regarding “available technology-based solutions” such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Global Positioning System (GPS), and Smart Cards.

The RFI indicated that the primary purposes for this effort are to monitor the movements of both registered and unregistered or unauthorized public utility vehicles, to apprehend illegally-operating vehicles real-time, and to maintain a database containing relevant information on traffic violations, among others.

“The colorum problem has many implications – from simple traffic congestion, to commuter safety, environmental pollution, and quality of life. What we’re looking for is an integrated system which makes the best use of progressive technology-based solutions to curb these problem areas,” said DOTC spokesperson Migs Sagcal.

One-on-one meetings to discuss project concepts will be held at the DOTC offices on May 28 and June 4, 2013, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Interested parties may reserve one-hour slots with the DOTC and the LTFRB by contacting the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Project Development through telephone no.(02)725 0013.

Cheers to Good Times with Carlo Rossi

I used to work as a researcher. Our group is involved in the conduct of studies related to food and nutrition. Part of our job is preparation of research proposals for presentation to our prospective donors. Therefore it entails sleepless nights and overtime duties to meet deadlines. During presentation proper, I always felt nervous whether our project will be approved?

Have you ever been in this situation?

Everyone's worried and anxious—waiting for the result of your presentation. You haven't slept properly for days working on that pitch. Then your phone rings. You almost drop it since you've been running on coffee all day. You're nervous but you answer. Yes! You win the client and everyone in the office starts buzzing, then screaming. You deserve to party. Go and celebrate this good time with your team!

“Partying is our way of saying ‘yahoo’ and expressing our delight in achieving success. Since the leap is very important to us, our way of celebration should be something that we will remember together with that accomplishment,” says Von de Torres, Managing Director, Emperador Distillers.

De Torres believes that partying over wine makes good times even better. “There are so many things in common about wine and happiness. As an American Chef-Author, Julia Child would put it, wine is one of the agreeable and essential ingredients of life. We all agree to happiness and its essence in our life so as with wine in important celebrations.”

But in order to have a real good time, be sure to get only the real and fine wine. People could all agree that only with fine wine can celebrations be truly enjoyed so it should be wine that gives authentic world-class flavor that special moments deserve. It should be something that doesn’t only fit the occasion but a high-quality wine that suits the taste.

Emperador Distillers brings Rossi Sweet Red, a sweet red wine crafted from grapes grown in California’s sun-drenched vineyards and bursting with flavor and aroma, for your cheers to good times. It has layers of vanilla, bright cherry and wild raspberry flavor creating a different kind of sweetness.

“Yes it is sweet but remains a real wine. It’s that different kind of sweetness that makes it unique but authentic. This is how real red wine should be. You can only expect such authenticity from the number one table wine in the world.”

De Torres warns against unauthentic sweet wines. “They’re basically bottled with very low alcohol content and lots of sweeteners, which is a far cry from authentic Rossi,” she says, adding that Rossi Sweet Red was specifically created to be sweet and be consumed cold, “As in with ice.”

One can already hear the purists scoffing but wine on-the-rocks is already becoming a trend in the US. Rossi Sweet Red, in particular, is recommended to be enjoyed with ice.

The ice, De Torres said, brings out the flavor and makes for a smoother finish and doesn’t compromise the taste and actually makes it even better. Even if the ice melts, the taste stays perfect so everyone can savor all the sweetness and real wine flavor.

So celebrate sweet victories, big or small—winning a pitch, wedding engagements, graduations, having a baby—with a wine that is just as sweet and a bit more refreshing. These are good times worth partying for. There’s a reason to be happy and to celebrate everyday. Whether baby steps or big leaps, you can always cheers to good times with Rossi Sweet Red.

Chat with your loved ones via SMS with the new Sun iMessenger

I have always been a Sun Cellular subscriber for the last 10 years because personally I find it easy to use. It has wide range of services, the signal in my area is strong and clear. Most of all, it offers very affordable rates and this is the one I am using to get in touch with my hubby who works overseas.

Unlike before, gone are the days when you had to spend a fortune in phone bills or on mobile internet fees to keep in touch with friends and family around the world. There is now a single service that integrates all the popular web chat platforms and makes it a snap to send messages and chat on any phone model worldwide.

Launched in 2006 and now wildly popular, Sun iMessenger is a breakthrough service that makes it possible to communicate with anyone from anywhere in the world, as long as they’re a Sun mobile subscriber. To do this, SunIM uses the text messaging feature of a phone, translating mobile chat into text messages seamlessly, and giving regular cellular phone users access to a service that would usually only be available to people with smart phones.

The service also allows you to send messages using your laptop, smart phone, or computer. It integrates several platforms: Yahoo Messenger, Facebook chat, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and, just recently, Gmail chat, making all your accounts available to you on one sign-in page. It is, to date, the only platform to do so.

Getting SUNiM service on your phone cannot be simpler. There’s nothing that you need to download and install, and there are no complicated codes to punch in. All a user has to do is to text SUNiM to 2746 from a phone using a Sun Cellular sim card. After a few minutes, you will receive clear, step-by-step instructions to help you get started.

SUNiMis also very affordable. To celebrate the first day of your SUNiM subscription, the first 24 hours will be completely free of charge. To top it off, if you invite your friends to use Sun iMessenger, you can also get free internet hours. For regular text replies, Sun iM only charges P 0.50, even less than a regular text message. But if you’d like to stay connected all day, there’s an option that gives you unlimited access for 24 hours, for only P20! Other payment options are P100 for seven days and P300 for a month. There are no hidden charges or extra fees, as users are charged only for messages that they reply to or for the time that they buy. Because of this, Sun iM is currently the most cost-effective chat mobile service available.
With Sun iM, you don’t have to wait in front of a computer to catch messages, or spend so much to send and receive them. It’s easy to use, very affordable, and best of all, it allows you to be reached anytime of the day, anywhere you are, through your choice of platform.

For more details, Text SUNIM to 2746 or visit www.sim.ph

OUT FOR A NIGHT TIME RUN: ENERGIZER NIGHT RACE FOR SAFE AND ECO-FRIENDLY LIGHTS

Nowadays, running is more than run in itself. Runners are now attracted to the varieties that of life that this fitness sport offers.

Variety is the spice of life, and the same is true for runners, who also like to mix things up in regard to their routine and their training. This need for variation extends all the way to the events and competitions in which runners participate.

To satisfy different quirks and fancies, event organizers have explored a multitude of ways to keep the running community on their toes. This includes running competitions with added obstacles, on off-road tracks and, most recently, holding races at night.

Competitive racing in the dead of night certainly adds a different dimension to the running experience. Being enveloped by darkness requires runners to be more sensitive to the slightest conditions on the road, demanding complete focus and undivided attention. Preparations in the run-up to competition also vary. Training regimen, as well as prep time, tend to differ, too, which only adds to the challenge.

Local runners have already had the pleasure of trying out night races through different competitions already hosted here in the Philippines. This night race craze, however, started in 2011 with one event, the Energizer Night Race.

That race was part of Energizer’s bigger initiative called the “Energizer Night Race for a Brighter World”, a series of nighttime running events held around the world including countries in Africa, Europe, North and South America, and throughout Asia. Over 75,000 participants joined the more than 30 Energizer Night Races held in 20 countries across the globe.

The magnitude of the event’s success, transcended more than mere numbers. This global night race has served as an effective vehicle in raising awareness of the world’s need for safe, clean, and affordable solar lighting. “It’s hard to believe that in this day and age that there are still around 1.3 billion people deprived of electricity and clean lighting,” says Energizer’s Brand Manager, Joan Mendoza. “This event is just one way in which Energizer can bring this issue forth and be addressed for the benefit of less fortunate communities all over the world.”

Running at night guided only by Energizer LED Headlamps, runners get a sense of how important light is. Usually taken for granted in developed areas, light and clean energy are extremely valuable in off-the-grid communities. They dictate a child’s capacity to learn, an adult’s ability to work, and the community’s maximum functionality. They also help promote personal health and the environment by lessening carbon emissions made by alternative light sources such as candles, kerosene lamps, and firewood.

The need for efficient and eco-friendly lighting has led Energizer to partner with One Million Lights (OML), a nonprofit organization that shares the same goal of providing rural communities around the world with the gift of light. Since 2011, Energizer and OML have donated 23 million hours’ worth of light through Energizer Solar-Powered LED flashlights and lamps to different remote communities in Latin America, Ethiopia, Kenya, and the Philippines.

Energizer’s efforts to put the issue of light and energy in perspective are part of their “That’s Positivenergy™” campaign that serves as the company’s platform to show its commitment to performance and responsibility. This means providing consumers with durable and energy efficient products for everyday needs.

Running has been an effective way of gathering the public’s support for worthy causes, from community health and fitness to environmental advocacies. By immersing runners in the kind of situations individuals in remote, off-the-grid communities go through, the company hopes participants look beyond the event and appreciate and support what it stands for.

To alleviate the lack of energy and light in far-flung communities, Energizer again strengthens its drive by calling out running and fitness enthusiasts to join in the cause by participating in this year’s Energizer Night Race Manila. The race will be held on May 4, 2013 at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig with the help of partners GMA Network and Schick.

Registration is on-going until April 30, 2013 at BROOKS SM North EDSA, RUNNR Bonifacio High Street, and Toby’s Sports EDSA Shangri-la, Glorietta, and SM Mall of Asia. For more information about the race, visit www.energizerglobalnightrace.com.
