Celebrating with Cakes

To celebrate my son's monthly milestone I do always buy him a cake.  Amidst heavy expenses on buying milk (since I was not able to breastfed) and diapers, I will set aside some money to buy him a cake monthly.

Cakes for 1st month - 4th month

Cakes for 5th month - 8th month

Cakes for 9th month - 1st Birthday
Maybe because as a young girl, for financial reasons I never experienced any birthday celebration nor having a cake.  Until now, I grew up not celebrating my own birthday.  I just pour my frustrations to my son by giving him something I was not able to enjoy before.

Happy 3rd Birthday!!!
Baptismal cake
Something is missing??? Right, the cake during his second birthday.  I can't find it for now 'coz it was my sister who took the pictures.  I'll just post later.

And for his upcoming 4th birthday next month - since Ivan has current preference for Thomas Train, I need to look for a birthday cake that might look like this one.

What about you, how do you celebrate birthdays and milestones?

A Fan of Kusina Master

Lately. my 4y old boy has developed a liking for Chef Boy Logro of the TV Show "Kusina Master".  He will usually watch each cooking episode everyday from Monday - Friday.

When I tag him along at cooking events, I can see that he was so eager in watching how everything's being done.

"I know how to cook but I am not a good cook".  A befitting description of me.  It was because I seldom cook and there's just two of us at home, I usually buy ready-to-eat meals.  Most of the time, I get food supply ("ulam") from my mom who lives nearby or I'll stay for dinner (lucky me).

The last time we visited Toy Kingdom instead of toy cars, he bought this plastic cooking set.

He will usually play with them as he imitates the cooking skills of Chef Logro.

But this one is one our wish list.  If, and only if his cousin will soon donate it to him.

My son might still be too young to dream of what he wanted to be someday.  But whatever it is, we are just proud parents and will surely support what career he will pursue.

LUMINARC: GLAM MOM Mother's Day Weekend Event

Plating Demo with Chef Him Uy de Baron

It was my second time witnessing Chef Him Uy de Baron, considered to be one of the top chef's in the country today. The first time was in a cooking show.

This time, Chef Him Uy de Baron demonstrated his plating skills using the latest collection from Luminarc.  According to him, plating is essential to any food such it will appear more palatable.  In any presentation it is but important to consider the following: texture, color, height, and contrast.

Another tip: Chef mentioned, he prefers to work with white plates.  Its just like working on a very clean canvas.

On this occasion, since it was Mother's Day, four lucky moms from the audience were selected to work together with Chef Him Uy de Baron and were given a chance to create with their own style.

The dishes presented were salad/appetizer, pasta, meat and desert.

Following are the creations made by Chef de Baron himself.

Luminarc, also presented the latest in their Dinnerware Collection.  You can choose from either colorful florals or classic black & white.

The Floral Series:

Anemone
Intricately placed stalks of pink flowers form a soothing vertical garden on the dinnerware. Anemone will no doubt heighten your dining senses as it brings out the flavor of home cooked food.

Bouton D'or

Bouton D'or is inspired by the lovely yellow buttercup flower! Its bright and lively flowers will definitely give that extra touch of warmth to your dining table.  Ideal for this summer.

Colombelle
Sweet girly ribbon bow, butterflies and flowers in a wide array of colors adorn this collection - one of the most colorful designs in the series.

Daliane
Daliane is a revisit of a classic Luminarc design.  Blue peony flowers combined with geometric floral on their classic Feston shaped plate exudes a subtle feeling of warmth, familiarity and comfort when dining.

Green Ode
A play of green shades sets Green Ode apart from the other dinnerware designs.  Large green floral motifs in photographic prints decorate the plates giving this floral range a modern touch.

Luminarc has another set of collection which is called "The Classic Series".  I will feature them in another post.

The Luminarc dinner collection is: fully tempered, extra resistant (3 times stronger than normal glass, 100% hygienic (as glass is a non-reactive material and does not absorb any substance), resistant to high temperature variance, dishwasher and microwave safe, and easily stackable.

These collections are available at SM, Robinsons, Landmark, Metro Market Department Stores in Metro Manila and selected provincial outlets.

American Standard Launches New Luxury Line of Bathroom Fixtures

I had the privilege of being among the several chosen ones to get a view of what's new with American Standard. The name American Standard is synonymous to bathroom, you may agree or disagree with me. What is the brand of your toilet bowl? Our is American Standard though it was purchased 15 years ago, it is still in good working condition, or as reliable as it should be.

American Standard, one of the leading makers of high-quality bathroom fixtures, launches its latest and most luxurious line of products that promises to make any home the envy of the neighborhood.  The latest line of shower heads, lavatories and water closets highlights the company’s commitment to design quality and innovation that it has long been known for.

These new product lines represent American Standard’s uncompromising belief in the growing sophistication of the market.  These products are here because of extensive product research into what the consumers want and what they need.”  said Noel Tolosa, American Standard marketing manager.

As a trendsetter in the design and innovation sector, American Standard has always ensured that its designs remain relevant to the needs of today’s families and to today’s times.

Conceptualizing for today’s modern dwellings

The company launched the Concept Cube, a line of compact but beautiful and stylish bathroom fixtures.  The Concept Cube seamlessly blends the sleek modern lines with innovative technologyusing strong and simple lines for a contemporary look.  A signature soft inner rim that lends architectural style beautifully balances this and is ideal for even small bathrooms so common in today’s condominium housing.  The Concept faucet series, on the other hand, complements the modern, compact and sophisticated styling of the water closets and lavatories.  Made of high-quality chrome, these faucets make even small bathrooms chic and stylish.  The faucet allows better water saving because it provides better control for users and being leak free.

Satis Asteo
It is said that the evolution of the water closet is a reflection of how civilized human living has become.  This philosophy is reflected in the Satis Asteo water closet collection, which features amenities like LED dim lighting, soft music, automatic seat open and flushing, twin nozzle bidet, and air purification system that eliminates bad odors and airborne fungi and bacteria.  The Satis Asteo reflects American Standard’s mantra of innovating on products to meet its customers’ changing lifestyles.

Eurozen
The EuroZen, on the other hand, brings the most innovative and convenient functions to bathroom hygiene in a sleek and compact water closet.  With functions like siphon jet tornado flushing, powerful massage/cleanse function, deodorizer, warm dryer, nozzle with automatic cleaning, anti-bacterial nozzle, seat heater, and lift-off and slow- close seat cover, the EuroZen gives new meaning to luxury, comfort and high-tech to water closets and will make any bathroom a conversation piece.

More vibrant colors mean more fun in the shower
Looking at the company’s new line of shower heads, it is clear that the inspiration came from one thing:  vibrant colors.  The iColor Hand Showers evokes a fantasy world of plastic and bubble.  Through a fascinating and playful concoction of art, science and technology, the iColor Hand Shower is well suited to today’s fun-loving and imaginative homeowner.  The line of products pushes the boundaries of the human imagination—with refreshing results .

Ventuno
The Ventuno collection is designed by award-winning Italian designer, Franco Bertoli. It is an absolute choice for cosmopolitan consumers as it reflects the patterns of today’s urban architecture and elements of modern style.  Designed with the sophisticated urbanite in mind, the Ventuno’s rounded, essentialized forms and geometric edges create sensations of pure harmony in every bathroom.

World-Class and award-winning designers
American Standard has always been setting trends in bathroom fixtures, not just in the aspect of technological innovation but in design as well.  This is made possible by a highly creative team whose members are also into other industries such as automotive, fashion, home and furniture, and luxury items, among others.

Some of the world’s most creative and award-winning industrial designers who design for American Standard are David Chipperfield, Ronen Joseph, Achim Pohl and Tomas Fiegl (Artefakt), Mark Sadler, Khumtong Jansuwan and Franco Bertoli, all of whom have earned awards from prestigious award-giving bodies.

So who knows your best kept secret? Where do you keep yourself always good looking? For the moms, where did you first learn that you are preggy?  it is at the BATHROOM.

The American Standard’s new line of bathroom fixtures is available in major building materials depots nationwide.

FILIPINO BLOGGERS HUB: A SIMPLE ACQUAINTANCE PARTY

In the cyber world where all bloggers are moving-in has become more challenging due to different trends that have beenborn from time to time in every click and tick of their finger on the mouse. As the blogger pursue their passion, they tend to produce more effective write-ups that are based on their experiences, observation and even with their own opinion.

Today, blogging becomes a good portal of advertisement and online promotion because it can give a huge impact and easy to access information upon clicking the publish button. In just one click, everything went to life as it was being shared and like by others instantly upon uploaded.

Given that bloggers exist every minute and seconds in every social-networking site as well as in the blogging flat form. While giving the readers and other people to have the latest updates as well as entertainment in their web sites or blog sites. But wait a minute; did all bloggers who read other sites blog knew the author personally or acquaintance? I think, not!

Perhaps, some know each other while others tend to get intimidated or something as they see each other in different places. Why? Maybe because they never get a chance to be introduce to each other.

Moreover, the blogosphere in the Philippines is just a small piece of the universal blogosphere. Where is so impossible to know the person one by one in a particular websites or blog site?  And so, bloggers created an event that we called “Filipino Bloggers Hub Party” to get a chance to see, meet and know the person behind in every blog that we read, follow and subscribe to.

On the 19th of May 2012, 1:00pm at the Central Colleges of the Philippines, bloggers around the Metro will gather to have a simple acquaintance party with full of surprises, giveaways, fun games and raffles.  This is the chance to meet and know other bloggers, and this is the day that all bloggers will unite and promise to continue what started intelligently as to give people good, and balance information that people want to know.

To all bloggers in the Metro out there, we would love to know you more and see you in the 1st Filipino Bloggers Hub Party of the year!

The Cost of Miscellaneous

I took photo of this announcement posted at the UPLB Registrar's Office when I accompanied my niece during her enrollment.

My apologies for the bit blurred photo because I took it from a glass counter. Here's what this announcement is all about.

University of the Philippines at Los Banos:
Schedule of Matriculation Fees for Freshman: First Semester 2012-2013

The list therefore includes the amount each new student should pay depends on their degree course (tuition, NSTP, miscellaneous, student fund, lab fee, ent/dep, ID).  Each course has different number of required units for the First Semester such total amount to be paid varies.

Per unit now costs P1,000.  So, for entering BS Ag.Econ (my UPLB degree), he/she has to pay P19,000 tuition fee or total of P23,205.50 to include other fees.

But what further caught my attention was the cost of miscellaneous and student fund fees with the following breakdown.

Miscellaneous:                                                    Student Fund:
Library - P1,100.00                                               Publication - P40.00
Athletic - 75.00                                                       Student Council - 5.00
Registration - 40.00                                               Community chest - 0.50
Medical - 50.00                                                      Total - P45.50
Cultural - 50.00
Internet - 260.00
Energy - 425.00
Total - P2.000.00

As I read this announcement, something make me worried.  When I was studying back then at UPLB, since I was on Full Scholarship, I need not pay for tuition and other fees except for miscellaneous and student fund fee in the amount of P35.50. I can also remember during my first semester I only paid something like P800.00 for 19 units which later I was able to refund when my scholarship application was approved.

It further agonizes me the rising cost of education expenses, the big difference between the amount of P35.50 and P2,045.50 after more than 20 years.  Currently we are still paying for our son's educational plan and I am just thinking that possibly by the time he enter the University 13 years from now the amount we'll be getting from his educational plan might just be enough to cover miscellaneous expenses, whew!

Last school year, our little boy entered Nursery School and part of school expenses is the miscellaneous fee for which I paid P2,310.00.  Oh! I did forgot to request for the actual breakdown but accordingly it covers energy fee, dental fee and ID.  Maybe next time I need to request further information on what I am paying for. My Grade III niece studying in a different private school, according to my sister she paid P8k plus for miscellaneous.

What about all the parents out there, do you have any idea what you are paying for?  Do you think this miscellaneous fees are justified enough to be paid apart from tuition fees?

Personally I am so excited about it.  I've already made plans with my siblings.  This time we will be dining at Classic Savory Restaurant at SM Calamba. I also heard they are going to have an upcoming promotions on Mother's Day.

Balete Community Service by Woodrose Girls

The other day, I went with a team who visited the PAREF Woodrose girls at Balete, Batangas participating in the Rural Services Program.  It is one among the several summer activities that students of  PAREF Woodrose engage themselves with.  This is a 5-days activity being coordinated by the Narra Nueva Study Center. This year, there are 13 girls who participated in this activity.

The girls are lodged at the Balete Family Farm School.  In here they are learning how to live a simple rural life.  The girls share bedroom, a relatively small one which is possibly a far cry from the comfortable one they have at home.  They also share a common bathroom.

The Rural Services Program is one of the Community Services of PAREF Woodrose School.  Primarily, the aim is to give opportunities for the students to participate in community work wherein it enables them to tap their great potential in rendering time, energy and talent to others.

This year, the girls chose to serve at Balete Central School located in Balete, Batangas.  It is a 5th-class municipality located just beside Taal Lake, with a nice panoramic view of the famous Taal Volcano.  The people in here are mostly farmers and fishermen, deriving income through fish catching at the lake.  Basically, this is a rural and poor community.

"I learned here that I need to focus more on other's needs more than ourselves".  This is the response I get from one of the PAREF Woodrose girls participating in the program when I asked her what was the most important learning she had so far from this activity.

At the Balete Central School, the girls teach basic English; Arts and Crafts; and Values - Cathecism.  As I personally observe, despite some communication barrier because most of these girls are not fluent or can speak "Tagalog" very well they are trying their very best to be good teachers to the kids.

The girls, likewise were so gracious enough to give each and every participant pupil a school set like this one.  The envelope contains a notebook, scissors, crayons and pencils.

Other than learning a lot from these girls, the pupils were also lucky enough receiving free snacks as well.  Since the kids are mostly from poor families, not everyone can afford to bring their own snacks in school.

Lessons are conducted in the morning.  In the afternoon, the girls do home visitations.  They take time to visit some of the families of these kids whom they are teaching.  Such, they further learn all about rural life and how other people live.  The objective is not for the girls to feel pity about the condition of the other people but rather for them to learn and knows the reality of the world outside their community and how they could be of help.

According to some of the girls, despite the difficulties they encountered in this activity, still they are very much willing to do it the second time around or even  repeatedly.

 The School:

PAREF WOODROSE  is an educational institution where academic excellence and personal information are achieved through close collaboration between the school and the home. Students of Woodrose, at a young age are already being taught not only academic excellence but focusing also on character formation.  School curriculum teaches them to become independent thinker,  an effective communicator, a responsible citizen, and a lifelong learner.

It was established by the Parents for Education Foundation (PAREF) way back in 1977,  a group of parents who wanted to be fully involved in providing an integral education for their children.

Mentoring System:

Believing that the effectiveness of child education depends largely on the unity of goals between the home and the school, Woodrose actively undertakes a close collaboration among parents, teachers and mentors.  Each student is assigned a mentor who becomes the parents' partner in guiding their daughter toward the pursuit of academic excellence and character.

Parents are educated as well through the "New Parent Education Program of NPEP.  It helps parents to become better parents, thus effectively fostering their children's academic achievement.  The Program is consists of 5 modules: Case Study Method; Family Visioning; Deliberate Parenting;  Dignity of the Person; and Home-School Collaboration and Marital Relations.

I wish I have a daughter and I am personally excited how to get admission at Woodrose.
