The FNRI 2012 Menu Guide Calendar

Received this very beautiful and interesting calendar as a gift from my former boss at the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) where I worked for 15 years before shifting to my present career as a full-time mother.

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute is one of the research and development (R&D) agencies under the Department of Science and Technology.  It is the one who primarily undertake researches about the Filipino citizen's nutritional status, develop and recommend health and nutrition related policy options.  If sometimes you get to hear on the news how many Filipino children are malnourished? or how many Filipino pregnant women are suffering from anemia, or are we short on our protein intake?  The answers to all of these are documented regularly through the efforts of FNRI researchers, where I am proud to say I've been a part of and I think I have also contributed well to some of these researches.

The calendar preparation is a yearly project of the institute showcasing different health topics each year.  This year 2012, it features a year round menu guide featuring indigenous Filipino vegetables.  The calendar is very informative and helpful in itself because it features different vegetables that are not so famous and most of the time we are not aware they can be found in our own backyard especially those living in the provinces.

Calendar Highlights:
  •  all about vegetables - there's a discussion portion detailing the benefits of vegetables and why it should be regularly consumed, recommended servings and nutritional value

  •  a 12 month, 7 day cycle menus which are lists of dishes that are suggested for serving for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.  So for moms like me having difficulties thinking of what to cook or prepare for the next meal, this is it.

  • a featured recipe each month  using one or more indigenous vegetables (hopefully I can make succeeding posts for each of the monthly recipe)

  •  a list and description of indigenous vegetables - get to know those greens around us
The calendar was made possible through the joined efforts of  FNRI-DOST and its private partner Unilever Philippines,.  a partnership for promoting healthy food choices, nutritious and affordable recipes for the filipino population for several years now.

Credits are due to the FNRI technical researchers, technical advisers and of course their Chief Editor, Dr. Zenaida V. Narciso, Chief Science Research Specialist, Technology Diffusion and S&T Services Division, FNRI.
