I took photo of this announcement posted at the UPLB Registrar's Office when I accompanied my niece during her enrollment.
My apologies for the bit blurred photo because I took it from a glass counter. Here's what this announcement is all about.
University of the Philippines at Los Banos:
Schedule of Matriculation Fees for Freshman: First Semester 2012-2013
The list therefore includes the amount each new student should pay depends on their degree course (tuition, NSTP, miscellaneous, student fund, lab fee, ent/dep, ID). Each course has different number of required units for the First Semester such total amount to be paid varies.
Per unit now costs P1,000. So, for entering BS Ag.Econ (my UPLB degree), he/she has to pay P19,000 tuition fee or total of P23,205.50 to include other fees.
But what further caught my attention was the cost of miscellaneous and student fund fees with the following breakdown.
Miscellaneous: Student Fund:
Library - P1,100.00 Publication - P40.00
Athletic - 75.00 Student Council - 5.00
Registration - 40.00 Community chest - 0.50
Medical - 50.00 Total - P45.50
Cultural - 50.00
Internet - 260.00
Energy - 425.00
Total - P2.000.00
As I read this announcement, something make me worried. When I was studying back then at UPLB, since I was on Full Scholarship, I need not pay for tuition and other fees except for miscellaneous and student fund fee in the amount of P35.50. I can also remember during my first semester I only paid something like P800.00 for 19 units which later I was able to refund when my scholarship application was approved.
It further agonizes me the rising cost of education expenses, the big difference between the amount of P35.50 and P2,045.50 after more than 20 years. Currently we are still paying for our son's educational plan and I am just thinking that possibly by the time he enter the University 13 years from now the amount we'll be getting from his educational plan might just be enough to cover miscellaneous expenses, whew!
Last school year, our little boy entered Nursery School and part of school expenses is the miscellaneous fee for which I paid P2,310.00. Oh! I did forgot to request for the actual breakdown but accordingly it covers energy fee, dental fee and ID. Maybe next time I need to request further information on what I am paying for. My Grade III niece studying in a different private school, according to my sister she paid P8k plus for miscellaneous.
What about all the parents out there, do you have any idea what you are paying for? Do you think this miscellaneous fees are justified enough to be paid apart from tuition fees?

It doesn't make sense really, the education nowadays is more of just merely for business.
ReplyDeleteI agree! putting up a school is a good business, I am thinking.
DeleteYeah! UP is way more expensive now than it used to be before. I think ours was the last batch (2006-2010) that got to enjoy the lower rates. I actually got full scholarship sa ateneo, covered pati miscellaneous fees. The miscellaneous fees were more or less that amount. :)
ReplyDeleteIt indeed really has become more expensive but accordingly as compared with private schools at least UP has got lower rates.
Deleteoh so it's no longer that inexpensive to attend UP huh. Back in my days - student number 97 - i only have to pay maximum of 500 pesos for the miscellaneous
ReplyDeleteYeah! mine is 84 and I am paying before P35.50. But back during that days, thirty five pesos is something so important.
DeleteI graduated in public college so I am proud to say na nagtapos ako ng hindi magastos, but now I am planninng to save more for my son's education
ReplyDeleteCongrats to you! same here. But how I wish my son can enter a state university para less expenses.
Deletetuition costs were the thing that most moms hates to know esp. now that school year is approaching.
ReplyDeletemy daughter was paying P600/unit for tuition after applying stfap, its under bracket b. she made an appeal last year for re-bracketing but wasn't approve :(
good day to you. just bloghopping this early Friday morning. See you....

OMG. Php1,000 is so much for one unit. Education is indeed very expensive in the Philippines. Whew. this makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteThe miscellaneous fees are quite high, too.
it's very expensive to send kids to school na talaga, prep pa nga lang super mahal na...sana they learn how to value the opportunity to be able to study kc some cannot afford to send their kids to school...
ReplyDeleteEducation is so expensive nowadays. UP is now like a private school.
ReplyDeletesometimes there are fees showing up that we don't even make use of :(
ReplyDeleteHi Ms. Gigi! I actually graduated in UPD, and was also able to witness these miscellaneous fees back in the day. And I was fortunate enough to still enroll units that only costed me P300 each. But I know that those fees are also priced like that to help compensate for essential needs. Your niece can always apply for a scholarship if things get too steep, financially. :)
ReplyDeletemy sister was able to apply for student loan upon my niece's enrollment then later they will recompute how much still needed to pay upon approval of the STFAP.
Deletegrabe mahal na talag mag pa aral ngayon.. i'd like to think may pinupuntahan yung miscellaneous sa school na binayaran ko
ReplyDeleteOMG 25k? Wow... Good thing I am still single. Hehe.. Joking aside, no wonder so many kids are out of school their parents cannot afford to send them to school which is so sad. Education is still the best foundation. Our government should be able to provide more scholarships and help everyone by lowering the fees.
ReplyDeleteAhaha, I have the same sentiments. The cost of miscellaneous that I paid for my daughter's schooling this June equates to my whole tuition fee for the year when I was in High school. Haha.
ReplyDeletemine was even more than that, thanks for dropping by Ms. Blanca
DeleteGone were the days were tuition fee doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm wondering how much my daughter's college education 16 years from now?
ReplyDeleteI am thinking 'bout the same thing 'coz my son will still be in kindergarten this coming June.
DeleteUP is the best school and cheapest being the government school And I think the miscellaneous fees are just right considering how expensive the costs of education now a days. But my concern is those poor deserving scholar who don't have money to pay,on the second thought ,i was also thinking that even the poor students have the expensive latest cellphone/ gadgets so I am sure they can also pay the miscellaneous fee.
ReplyDeletemaybe the reason why UP has implemented the socialized tuition fee scheme. Only that they have to be meticulous with regards to their evaluation. Accordingly, there are still some who misdeclared their info just to pay lower fees. Hopefully, the most deserving and less privileged students can enjoy the program.
DeleteSo much for being iskolar ng bayan, right? I also studied in UP and back in the 80s, I felt that my P5k tuition fee was astronomical, hahaha!
ReplyDeletemy nephew enrolled at the Ateneo last schoolyear and his tuition plus misc was P83,000 for the first semester only...and what shocked me was the PE fee of P5,900...
ReplyDeleteI am a UP graduate too and I must say that education is getting more expensive as years go by. :(
ReplyDeleteI totally agree . . . I was really shocked how the fees have soared from years back.
Deletedahil sa post na toh napaisip ako, magkano na kaya ang aabutin ng matrikula sa panahon na ako na ang nagpapaaral? Mukang kailangan ko ng magipon ngayon pa lang. =)
ReplyDeleteThat miscellaneous thing on the statement of account is still amystery for me until now. this should be checked..
ReplyDeleteYeah! this time I will ask my son's school to provide the breakdown for the miscellaneous fee. At least I'll know what we are paying for. For them to think, "aba hindi ako ganun kagalante".
DeleteI guess schools really have to augment their expenses one way or another. At least nasa UP pa rin siya which is a very rare opportunity.
ReplyDeleteawakening post!since i am sending 10 nieces and nephews to private elem and high school, i always pay between P150,000.00 to -P250,000.00 every year for all of them.My plan is to give them a good start so they can get in public school in college.but i didn't know it is that expensive now in state univ coz when i studied in PLM which is a state univ like UP need not pay anything. then for law school i was a full scholar for 4 years so also didn't spend anything.in college and not pay. Looks like my plan to not pay much for my pamnagkin's eductation will not happen huh. Glad i got an investment fund!
ReplyDeleteWow! so nice of you. For now since I am not working full-time, I can't help much on my niece's schooling. But I'll just try to give her anything I can.
Deleteoh yeah... enrollment is fast approaching again... hay.. kindergarten plng anak ko but it already cost 30k what more pa on her higher year not to mention i have 3 kids. then there's this K-12 pa
ReplyDeleteUP students are supposed to be the"scholars ng bayan"
ReplyDeletemeaning they don't have to pay that much because
the tuition fee is being shouldered by government and other NGO's for that matter.
State universities should have minimal amount of expenses
since they are considered such.
nowhere to go but up!!!.. my! dito college ang mahal.. free naman public education, pag mag private super mahal din!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was studying DVetMed at UPLB, I am only paying 8000 pesos every sem. Pinakamataas na tution fee sa dahil sa laboratories pero ngayon, umaabot na pala ng 25k. Paano na masasabing Isko at Iska ang mga mag-aaral ng UP?
ReplyDeleteActually the tuition fee increase on Universities is quite alarming. Makes you wonder if you can shoulder it by the time your kids are off to college.
